Adams Canyon Falls: A Wasatch Front Gem Above Layton
Uinta-Wasatch-Cache National Forest, Davis County
About Adams Canyon Falls
Adams Canyon Falls is Davis County's finest waterfall hike — a 40-foot plunge into a narrow slot canyon at the head of Adams Canyon above Layton. The trail climbs 800 feet through oak brush and maple forest to the base of the falls, where the walls of the canyon close in dramatically to create a slot-canyon environment unique on the Wasatch Front.
The falls are best from late April through June when snowmelt from the Wasatch Mountains feeds the canyon creek. In October the maple and oak brush along the trail turn brilliant orange and red, making the autumn version of this hike equally spectacular. The trail is well-maintained and clearly marked, making it accessible to fit hikers of moderate experience.

Trail Description
From the Adams Canyon trailhead off Eastside Drive in Layton, the trail immediately begins climbing through Gambel oak brush. Multiple switchbacks gain elevation quickly with views of the Great Salt Lake basin below.
After 2 miles the canyon narrows significantly and the sound of the falls grows louder. The final section is a scramble through the slot canyon to the base of the 40-foot plunge. The pool at the base is cold and clear. Return via the same trail.
Tips & What to Bring
- The upper canyon scramble requires using hands on rocks — wear sturdy shoes
- Great Salt Lake views on the lower trail sections are spectacular in morning light
- Spring (May) offers peak flow; October offers peak fall color — both excellent
- The trailhead can be crowded on weekends; the upper canyon sees fewer people
