Alamere Falls: Big Sur of the North — A Coastal Waterfall at Point Reyes
Point Reyes National Seashore, Marin County
About Alamere Falls
Alamere Falls is one of the most extraordinary waterfall destinations in California — a cascade that drops directly from a coastal bluff onto the Pacific Ocean beach at Point Reyes National Seashore in Marin County. It is one of only two tidal waterfalls on the US Pacific Coast, and reaching it requires an 8-mile round trip through some of the most beautiful coastal wilderness in Northern California.
The trail passes through the heart of the Point Reyes backcountry — grassy headlands, coastal scrub, Douglas fir forest, and finally the blufftop above Wildcat Beach. The Pacific Ocean is visible for most of the hike. The falls cascade in multiple small tiers before plunging the final drop directly onto the beach below — a sight that never loses its power no matter how many photographs you have seen.
Trail Highlights
- One of only two tidal waterfalls on the US Pacific Coast
- 8-mile round trip through the spectacular Point Reyes coastal wilderness
- The falls drop from a coastal bluff directly onto Wildcat Beach
- Wild elk are commonly spotted on the coastal prairie along the approach
- True backcountry experience with a dramatically rewarding payoff
Trail Description
From the Palomarin trailhead near the town of Bolinas, follow the Coast Trail north along the coastal bluffs. The trail passes through eucalyptus groves and coastal scrub, with frequent ocean views. Lake Ranch and Bass Lake are midway landmarks.
At approximately 4 miles the trail reaches the bluffs above Wildcat Beach. A use trail descends to the beach where Alamere Creek pours over the bluff in multiple tiers. Walk to the base of the final drop for the full experience. The beach is wild, remote, and spectacular. Return via the same trail.
Tips & What to Bring
- Point Reyes can be foggy even in summer — layer up and bring a wind shell
- Start early: 8.4 miles with coastal wind and undulating terrain takes 4-5 hours
- Download the NPS Point Reyes trail map before you go — cell service is unreliable
- Check tide tables — the beach approach to the falls base is easiest at low tide
- Tule elk are frequently seen on the coastal prairie; keep respectful distance
