Amicalola Falls: The Tallest Cascading Waterfall East of the Mississippi
Amicalola Falls State Park, Dawson County
About Amicalola Falls
Amicalola Falls is one of the most spectacular natural features in Georgia. The falls tumble 729 feet in seven separate cascades through a narrow gorge in Dawson County, making them the tallest cascading waterfall east of the Mississippi River. Amicalola means 'tumbling water' in Cherokee — an accurate description of the roaring white cascade that thunders down the mountain.
The falls serve as the start of the Approach Trail to Springer Mountain, the southern terminus of the Appalachian Trail. Every year thousands of AT thru-hikers pass by Amicalola Falls on their way to the white blazes. The state park offers comfortable lodge accommodations and a full visitor center with interpretive exhibits on the AT and regional natural history.
