๐ฅพ Trail Info
There are hikes that are beautiful. There are hikes that are challenging. And then there's Angels Landing โ a hike that is both, plus something harder to name: genuinely thrilling. The final half-mile to the summit involves scrambling along a knife-edge ridge using iron chains bolted into the rock, with steep drop-offs on both sides. It is not for everyone. But if you have a head for heights and reasonable fitness, it's one of the most unforgettable experiences in the national park system.
The Trail: What You're Getting Into
The hike starts at the Grotto Trailhead along the Zion Canyon Shuttle road. The first 2 miles follow the West Rim Trail โ a well-maintained path that gains elevation steadily through Walter's Wiggles, a series of 21 steep switchbacks carved into the cliff face. This section is hard work but completely safe and accessible to most fit hikers.
At Scout Lookout (elevation 5,790 ft), you reach a decision point. The view from here is already extraordinary. Most people turn around here, and that's a completely valid choice โ you still get breathtaking views of Zion Canyon below.
If you continue, the final 0.5 miles to the summit is the famous chain section. You'll use iron chains hammered into the sandstone to haul yourself along the exposed ridge. There are narrow passages where hikers going up and down must pass each other with significant drops on both sides. The summit rewards you with 360-degree views of the canyon that are genuinely hard to describe.
Permit Information (Important)
As of 2022, the final chain section of Angels Landing requires a permit via lottery. Seasonal lotteries open months in advance on recreation.gov; day-before lotteries are also available. Without a permit, you can still hike to Scout Lookout.
Tips for Hiking Angels Landing
- Go early or late. Midday in summer means 100ยฐF+ temperatures in the canyon and a traffic jam on the chains. Sunrise hikes are magical and far less crowded.
- Avoid wet conditions. The sandstone becomes dangerously slippery when wet. Do not attempt the chain section in rain.
- Wear grippy shoes. Trail runners or hiking boots with good rubber soles are essential. Do not hike this in sandals.
- Bring enough water. Minimum 3 liters per person in summer. There is no water on the trail after the trailhead.
- Be honest with yourself. If heights genuinely terrify you, Scout Lookout is a worthy destination on its own.
What to Wear and Bring
- Grippy trail shoes โ non-negotiable
- Hydration pack (3L) โ bring more water than you think you need
- Sunscreen, hat, sunglasses
- Gloves (optional but nice โ the chains get hot and sharp-edged)
Getting There
Zion National Park is located near Springdale, Utah. Private vehicles are not permitted on the main Zion Canyon Scenic Drive in peak season โ park at the Zion Canyon Visitor Center and take the free shuttle to the Grotto stop. Park entrance: $35 per vehicle.
The Verdict
Angels Landing deserves its reputation. The chain section is genuinely exposed and demands respect โ but it's also well-maintained and thousands of people complete it safely every year. If you're fit, comfortable with heights, and have your permit, do not skip this one.
