About Beech Run Falls

Beech Run Falls is the kind of place only locals know about. Tucked into a narrow hollow near Davis in Tucker County, the falls spill in two tiers down a mossy sandstone face into a clear pool below — all within a cathedral of beech, birch, and hemlock that gives the creek its name.

The approach trail follows the hollow upstream, staying close to the creek and crossing it several times. The forest is quiet and dense, with fern-covered banks and the sound of moving water as a constant companion. This is a true off-the-beaten-path gem in a county already blessed with spectacular waterfalls.

Trail Highlights

  • Two-tiered cascade in a quiet hemlock and beech hollow
  • Pristine, clear water unusual in the tannic Blackwater drainage
  • Excellent solitude — very few visitors find this waterfall
  • Multiple creek crossings make for an adventurous approach
  • Beautiful in all seasons, including winter ice formations

Trail Description

From Davis, follow a forest road south into the Beech Run drainage. The unmarked trail begins at a small pull-off and follows the creek upstream through dense forest. Multiple shallow crossings of Beech Run are required — stepping stones exist but may be submerged in spring.

After approximately one mile the hollow narrows and the falls come into view. The upper tier drops 15 feet over a mossy ledge; the lower tier cascades another 20 feet into the pool below. The area around the pool is flat and shaded — a perfect lunch spot. Return the same way.

Tips & What to Bring

  • A GPS track is strongly recommended as the trail is unmarked
