Blackwater Falls: West Virginia's Most Iconic Waterfall
Blackwater Falls State Park, Tucker County
About Blackwater Falls
Blackwater Falls is the centerpiece of Blackwater Falls State Park near Davis, West Virginia — and easily the most photographed waterfall in the Mountain State. The falls plunge 57 feet into a rugged canyon carved by the Blackwater River, its tea-colored water stained by fallen hemlock and red spruce needles. The result is a stunning amber cascade framed by dark canyon walls and dense boreal forest.
The park sits high on the Allegheny Plateau at roughly 3,100 feet elevation, which means cooler temperatures even in summer — and spectacular fall foliage from late September through October. This trail is accessible for all ages, with a paved path and well-maintained boardwalks leading to multiple overlooks.
Trail Highlights
- 57-foot plunge into a dramatic tannic amber river canyon
- Paved, accessible trail suitable for all ages and abilities
- Stunning fall foliage from late September through mid-October
- Multiple overlooks along the Gentle and Pendleton trails
- Adjacent to Blackwater Falls State Park Lodge and campground
Trail Description
From the main parking area near the lodge, follow the paved Gentle Trail toward the main overlook. You will hear the falls well before you see them. The primary overlook platform delivers a jaw-dropping view of the full 57-foot drop framed by dark hemlocks and maples.
Continue down the Pendleton Trail — a series of wooden stairs and boardwalk descending into the canyon — for up-close views at the base. The stairs are steep but maintained. From the bottom you can feel the mist and see the amber-colored water churning in the plunge pool. Return the same way or loop via the upper trail for additional angles.
Tips & What to Bring
- Arrive early morning for the best light and fewest crowds, especially on fall weekends
- The canyon stairs are steep — wear shoes with solid grip
- A polarizing filter dramatically reduces glare on the water for photos
- The park lodge has a restaurant; plan a meal after your hike
- Download the trail map before you go — cell service is spotty in the park
