Brasstown Falls is, technically, four waterfalls. The creek cascades in a series of drops through a steep-walled gorge carved into the Blue Ridge foothills, each level offering its own character — from broad, fanning slides to narrow canyon plunges. It's one of South Carolina's most dramatic waterfall corridors, and it remains refreshingly undervisited.

Trail Overview

The trail descends steeply from the roadside parking area on Brasstown Road into the gorge of Brasstown Creek. The path is short but the grade is significant — roughly 300 feet of descent in under a mile, with loose rocks and roots demanding careful footing. Hiking poles are strongly advised. At the bottom, you're rewarded with access to all four tiers of the falls within a short stretch of creek.

The Four Falls

The uppermost tier is the tallest — a 30-foot plunge into a dark pool. Scrambling down the gorge wall reveals three more cascades in quick succession, each separated by short pools and undercut ledges. The lowest tier spreads wide over a sloped rock face before the creek quiets into a gentle run below. Photographers will want to allow two hours minimum at the base.

Tips for Your Visit

  • Difficulty note: Rated Moderate but the descent is steep and footing is tricky — not suitable for very young children
  • Trekking poles: Near-essential for the descent and return climb
  • Best season: Late fall through spring (leaves down + high water = maximum drama)
  • Crowds: Lightly visited — you may have the gorge to yourself
