About Bridalveil Fall

Bridalveil Fall is the waterfall that greets every visitor entering Yosemite Valley from the west. The 617-foot cascade drops from a hanging valley on the south wall in a delicate, swaying veil — particularly beautiful in spring when the Merced River runs full and winds push the plume sideways across the granite face. The Ahwahnee name for the falls is 'Pohono,' meaning 'spirit of the puffing wind.'

The short paved trail to the base is accessible to virtually any visitor and delivers a mist-soaked close-up of the falls in peak season. In late spring the spray drenches everyone who approaches the base. By late summer the falls diminish but remain photogenic. This is one of the most essential stops in any Yosemite visit.

Trail Highlights

  • 617-foot fall from a hanging valley — most recognizable waterfall in Yosemite
  • Short paved trail accessible to virtually all visitors
  • Spring mist from the falls soaks hikers approaching the base — bring rain gear
  • The 'spirit of the puffing wind' — the plume sways dramatically in wind
  • Perfect introduction to Yosemite waterfall hiking for first-time park visitors

Trail Description

From the Bridalveil Fall parking area on Wawona Road, follow the paved path toward the base of the falls. The roar and mist grow rapidly as you approach. The path curves to a viewpoint platform directly at the base of the plunge.

In late spring the mist is so heavy that staying dry is impossible — lean into it. The pool below the falls is reached by scrambling on rocks (wet and slippery). Return via the same paved path. The falls are photogenic at all times of day but particularly beautiful with morning backlight.

Tips & What to Bring

  • Wear a rain jacket or accept that you will get completely soaked in spring
  • Photography tip: shoot from 100 feet back to capture the full 617-foot drop in frame
  • The falls are best May-June; by August they may reduce to a trickle
  • Visit immediately upon entering the valley for the best light and fewer crowds
  • The paved trail is stroller and wheelchair accessible from the parking area
