Broke Leg Falls: A Pioneer-Named Plunge in Bath County
Broke Leg Creek, Bath County
About Broke Leg Falls
Broke Leg Falls earns its colorful name from a pioneer-era hunting accident in the rugged hollows of Bath County. The falls themselves are far more welcoming — a spectacular 60-foot plunge over a sandstone overhang into a deep pool on Broke Leg Creek. The gorge surrounding the falls is one of the most scenic in the Cumberland Plateau region of northeastern Kentucky.
The trail to Broke Leg Falls descends steeply into the gorge through a forest of oak, beech, and hemlock. The creek corridor is lined with enormous sandstone boulders that have tumbled from the cliffs above. This is a rewarding but demanding hike that sees relatively light traffic, making solitude easy to find.
Trail Highlights
- Dramatic 60-foot plunge over a sandstone overhang
- Rugged sandstone boulder field along the creek approach
- One of the most historically interesting waterfall names in Kentucky
- Excellent solitude on a trail with light to moderate use
- Deep swimming pool at the base of the falls
Trail Description
From the trailhead off KY-36 near Owingsville, follow the trail north into the Broke Leg Creek drainage. The trail immediately enters hardwood forest and begins descending toward the creek. Large sandstone boulders appear along the slope as you drop elevation.
The creek gorge narrows significantly in the final half mile before the falls. Step carefully over the boulders to reach the base of the 60-foot drop. The overhang above the falls keeps the base area shaded and cool. Return via the same route — the climb out of the gorge is the most demanding section.
