Wildlife: elk, mule deer, black bears, marmots, pikas, ptarmigan, golden eagles.
Best seasons: July through mid-September; an excellent multi-day extension into the St. Vrain watershed. Buchanan Pass at 12,000 feet in the Indian Peaks Wilderness crosses the Continental Divide through wild, uncrowded terrain northwest of Boulder. Less visited than the popular Brainard Lake area, it rewards with genuine high-alpine solitude.
Pack plenty of water — desert and high-altitude trails demand more hydration than you expect. Layers are essential above 10,000 feet.
Leave No Trace: stay on designated trails, pack out all waste, and respect wildlife and other visitors.
