Burney Falls: California's Eighth Wonder of the World
McArthur-Burney Falls Memorial State Park, Shasta County
About Burney Falls
Burney Falls flows at an almost impossibly consistent rate — 100 million gallons per day, every day, year-round — because its source is an underground volcanic aquifer rather than seasonal snowmelt or rainfall. The 129-foot cascade pours from a basalt cliff draped in moss and fern, with water also seeping from the cliff face itself in a dozen smaller curtains alongside the main plunge. Theodore Roosevelt reportedly called it 'the eighth wonder of the world.'
Unlike most California waterfalls that diminish in late summer, Burney Falls is equally spectacular in September as it is in May. The surrounding park in Shasta County offers camping, swimming in Lake Britton, and a trail system through old-growth conifer forest. The combination of reliable water, great camping, and a short walk to the falls makes this one of northern California's finest outdoor destinations.
Trail Highlights

- Equally spectacular in summer as in spring — no seasonal disappointment
- Full-service state park with camping, swimming in Lake Britton, and RV hookups
Trail Description
From the parking area near the park visitor center, follow the paved trail a few hundred feet to the falls overlook. The view of the full 129-foot drop and the seeping cliff face is immediately stunning.
Continue on the loop trail that descends to the base of the falls and follows Burney Creek downstream through old-growth forest to Lake Britton. The base of the falls is cool, misty, and surrounded by greenery even in August. Return via the same loop or the upper creek trail.
