About Cane Creek Falls

Cane Creek Falls is one of the most pleasant surprises in the Daniel Boone National Forest near Williamsburg in Whitley County. The falls slide diagonally across a broad sandstone ledge rather than plunging straight down, creating a wide, shimmering cascade that photographs beautifully from multiple angles. The pool at the base is clear and inviting in summer.

The trail follows Cane Creek upstream through a classic southern Daniel Boone gorge of sandstone walls, mountain laurel, and hemlock. The forest here is home to a variety of spring wildflowers including trout lily and hepatica. The falls area is quiet and off the main tourist circuit, making it an excellent choice for hikers seeking solitude near the Tennessee border.

  • Wide diagonal slide waterfall over a broad sandstone ledge
  • Clear, swimmable pool at the base in summer
  • Classic Daniel Boone National Forest gorge scenery
  • Quiet trail with light foot traffic year-round

Trail Description

From the trailhead on a forest access road near Williamsburg, follow the trail upstream along Cane Creek. The gorge is immediately scenic, with sandstone walls reflecting in the clear creek below.

After 1.3 miles the trail delivers you to the base of Cane Creek Falls. The diagonal slide across the sandstone ledge is about 20 feet tall and 30 feet wide — broad enough to create a wide fan of water at the base. The pool is perfect for a cool dip on a hot day. Return the same way.

Tips & What to Bring

  • The slide surface is extremely slippery — do not attempt to walk on the waterfall face
  • Bring a topo map — the forest access roads to the trailhead can be confusing
  • Summer swimming in the pool is excellent; bring a towel
  • The waterfall shrinks in dry summer months — peak flow is April through June
  • Within 30 minutes of Cumberland Falls — easily combined for a great Whitley County day
