About Cathedral Falls

Cathedral Falls is proof that a great waterfall does not always require a long hike. Located just off US-60 near Gauley Bridge in Fayette County, this 60-foot cascade tumbles from a mossy sandstone overhang into a pool at the base of a narrow hollow. The falls get their name from the cathedral-like rock amphitheater that frames them.

The falls flow best in spring and after heavy rains, but remain photogenic year-round. Gauley Bridge sits at the confluence of the Gauley and New rivers, putting Cathedral Falls within easy reach of visitors exploring New River Gorge National Park, Summersville Lake, or Hawks Nest State Park.

Trail Highlights

  • 60-foot plunge from a dramatic sandstone overhang
  • Literally steps from a roadside pull-off — no long hike required
  • Cathedral-like rock amphitheater surrounds the base
  • Flows strongest in spring and after rainfall
  • Excellent stopping point when exploring the New River Gorge region

Trail Description

Park at the designated pull-off on US-60 just east of Gauley Bridge. A short dirt path leads 200 feet to the base of the falls. The amphitheater walls and overhang create a natural echo chamber — stand quietly and listen to the water.

Explore the base of the falls and the small pool below. Scrambling up the side slope gives additional views of the full drop. Return to the parking area the same way — the entire visit rarely takes more than 30 minutes.

Tips & What to Bring

  • Visit in spring (March-May) for maximum water volume
  • The rocks at the base are extremely slippery — wear grippy shoes
  • This is an excellent add-on stop when driving between Fayetteville and Charleston
  • The pull-off is small; arrive early on weekends before it fills
  • Bring a wide-angle lens — the canyon walls make the falls feel taller than they are
