About Cumberland Falls

Cumberland Falls earns its nickname — the Niagara of the South — with good reason. The falls stretch 68 feet wide and plunge 60 feet across the full width of the Cumberland River, sending a permanent cloud of mist downstream that can be felt hundreds of feet away. Located in Cumberland Falls State Resort Park in McCreary County, it is one of the most dramatic waterfalls in the eastern United States.

What makes Cumberland Falls truly legendary is its moonbow. On clear full-moon nights, the mist from the falls refracts moonlight into a faint rainbow visible only in darkness — a phenomenon so rare that only one other place on Earth reliably produces it. Plan a visit around the full moon and prepare to be astonished.

Trail Highlights

  • 68 feet wide and 60 feet tall — the 'Niagara of the South'
  • Only waterfall in the Western Hemisphere to regularly produce moonbows
  • Located in a full-service state resort park with lodge and camping
  • Year-round accessibility on well-maintained park trails
  • Swimming area downstream from the falls (seasonal)

Trail Description

From the parking area near the park gift shop, take the paved trail toward the falls overlook. The roar of the water grows louder quickly. The main overlook platform puts you directly above the falls with a full-width view of the cascade.

Continue down to the river-level trail for a closer perspective at the base. The mist is intense near the base — keep your camera protected. For moonbow viewing, the overlook platform is the best position; arrive 30 minutes before moonrise and allow your eyes to fully dark-adapt.

Tips & What to Bring

  • Check the moonbow calendar online before booking — the park publishes full-moon dates
  • The mist soaks everything near the base — use a waterproof camera bag
  • The state park lodge is a classic; book well in advance for full-moon weekends
  • Downstream swimming is available seasonally — check park rules
  • Arrive at sunrise for misty morning light and fewer crowds
