Cummins Falls: Tennessee's Largest-Volume Waterfall
Cummins Falls State Park, Jackson County
About Cummins Falls
Cummins Falls is often called Tennessee's most powerful waterfall — not the tallest, but the one that moves the most water per second. The falls plunge 75 feet over a wide sandstone ledge on the Blackburn Fork of the Roaring River in Jackson County, feeding a massive swimming hole pool that is one of the most popular natural swimming destinations in middle Tennessee.
The gorge below the falls is spectacular — tall limestone and sandstone walls draped in fern, with the Blackburn Fork running cold and clear through the canyon floor. A permit system manages the crowds at the falls swimming area, ensuring a safer and more enjoyable experience. This is a must-do on any middle Tennessee outdoor itinerary.
Trail Highlights
- 75-foot plunge with the highest water volume of any waterfall in Tennessee
- Massive swimming hole pool at the base — one of the best in the Southeast
- Dramatic limestone and sandstone gorge with towering canyon walls
- Permit system ensures the area never becomes dangerously overcrowded
- State park with well-maintained trails and facilities
Trail Description
From the Cummins Falls State Park trailhead, follow the trail into the Blackburn Fork gorge. The trail passes through forest before descending to the creek level, where the canyon walls rise impressively on both sides.
The falls are heard well before they are seen. Approach the base carefully — the spray zone is extensive and the rocks are slippery. The plunge pool is enormous and deep, with the best swimming area along the edges away from the main current. Wear water shoes and a life jacket if you plan to swim near the falls base.
Tips & What to Bring
- Permits are required for the gorge and falls area in peak season — book in advance at tnstateparks.com
- Water shoes are mandatory for creek crossings and swimming
- Life jackets are strongly recommended near the falls — the current is powerful
- Visit outside peak season (spring or fall) for lower crowds and better water clarity
- Never swim near the base of the falls — the hydraulic can trap swimmers
