About Douglas Falls

Douglas Falls is one of Tucker County's quieter waterfall treasures — a 20-foot cascade on the North Fork of the Blackwater River, reached via a forest road hike through the Monongahela National Forest. The falls sit in a narrow gorge of moss-covered sandstone, with the dark tannic water of the North Fork pooling at the base.

The hike to Douglas Falls follows the North Fork upstream through mature hardwood forest, crossing several small tributary streams along the way. The area is remote enough that solitude is common, even on weekends. The falls are at their best in spring runoff and after late-summer storms.

Trail Highlights

  • Secluded 20-foot sandstone cascade on the North Fork Blackwater
  • Mature hardwood and hemlock forest along the approach trail
  • Excellent solitude — far fewer visitors than the main park sites
  • Dark tannic water characteristic of the Blackwater drainage
  • Best in spring or after heavy rain for maximum flow

Trail Description

From the trailhead near Thomas, follow the forest road/trail north along the North Fork of the Blackwater River. The path passes through hardwood forest with scattered hemlock groves. Several small stream crossings may be wet in spring.

After approximately 1.6 miles the trail drops toward the river and the falls come into view. A use trail leads to the base of the cascade. The plunge pool is shallow and clear. Return the same way, enjoying the gentle downstream walk on the return.
