Elakala Falls: Four Cascades Hidden Inside Blackwater Falls State Park
Blackwater Falls State Park, Tucker County
About Elakala Falls
While Blackwater Falls gets the headlines, Elakala Falls — a series of four cascades on Shay Run — is the waterfall that keeps photographers coming back to Blackwater Falls State Park. The upper falls tumbles about 25 feet into a mossy sandstone bowl, and long exposures turn it into pure silk against dark hemlock-filtered light.
The falls sit just a short walk from the park's main cabin area, yet far fewer visitors make the detour. All four cascades can be reached via a short descent into the gorge, with the lower falls requiring a bit more scrambling on wet rocks. This is one of WV's most rewarding quick hikes.
Trail Highlights
- Series of four separate cascades on Shay Run gorge
- Legendary long-exposure photography destination
- Less crowded than adjacent Blackwater Falls
- Dark hemlock canopy keeps the gorge cool even in summer
- Can be combined with Blackwater Falls trail for a full park day
Trail Description
From the parking area near the cabins, follow the trail sign for Elakala Falls into the Shay Run gorge. The first falls appears after a short descent — a graceful 25-foot drop into a sandstone plunge pool surrounded by moss-covered walls.
Continue downstream on the gorge path to find Falls 2, 3, and 4 in quick succession. The lower cascades require careful footing on wet rocks. Return the same way — the uphill back to the cabin area is gentle and short.
Tips & What to Bring
- Bring a tripod for long-exposure photography — a 1-4 second exposure produces silky water
- Wear waterproof shoes or trail runners; the gorge rocks stay wet year-round
- Visit on a weekday — weekends at Blackwater draw big crowds
- The gorge stays noticeably cooler than surrounding terrain — bring a layer
- Combine with Blackwater Falls for a full morning of waterfall hiking
