About Fall Creek Falls

Fall Creek Falls is one of those waterfalls that stops you in your tracks. At 256 feet, it is the tallest waterfall in the eastern United States — a free-falling plunge that disappears into a shaded gorge far below. Located in Fall Creek Falls State Park in Van Buren County on Tennessee's Cumberland Plateau, the falls are surrounded by a 26,000-acre park of deep gorges, cascades, and old-growth forest.

The park's trail system allows visitors to experience the falls from multiple perspectives — rim overlooks, gorge-level trails, and a suspension bridge that puts you eye-level with the canyon walls. Several other major waterfalls in the park complement the main event, including Cane Creek Falls, Piney Falls, and Cane Creek Cascades. A visit to Fall Creek Falls is a full-day Tennessee outdoor adventure.

Trail Highlights

  • 256-foot free plunge — the tallest waterfall in the eastern United States
  • Multiple additional waterfalls within the same 26,000-acre state park
  • Suspension bridge over the gorge provides dramatic views
  • Old-growth forest in the gorge includes trees hundreds of years old
  • Full-service state park with inn, camping, and recreation facilities

Trail Description

From the trailhead near the park nature center, follow the Fall Creek Falls Trail toward the rim overlook. The paved path delivers you to a platform directly above the 256-foot drop — the perspective is breathtaking and slightly terrifying. The gorge below is perpetually misty.

Descend via the gorge trail (stairs and switchbacks) to the base of the falls. The scale from below is even more impressive — the water seems to come from the sky. Continue to the suspension bridge for views across the gorge to Cane Creek Falls. Return via the upper rim trail.

Tips & What to Bring

  • Budget a full day — the park has 4 major waterfalls worth visiting
  • The gorge trail to the base involves steep stairs; take your time on the descent
  • Weekends in fall bring large crowds — visit midweek for a better experience
  • The park inn and restaurant are convenient for an overnight trip
  • Bring rain gear — the gorge creates its own weather and mist is ever-present
