Feather Falls: The Sixth-Highest Waterfall in the United States
Plumas National Forest, Butte County
About Feather Falls
Feather Falls is the sixth-highest waterfall in the United States, plunging 410 feet in an unbroken freefall into the Middle Fork of the Feather River in Plumas National Forest near Oroville. The setting is spectacular — a sheer granite amphitheater draped in manzanita and oak above the canyon, with the roar of the falls audible from the overlook perch far above the river.
The 9.7-mile round trip trail through Plumas National Forest is a legitimate challenge — nearly 10 miles with significant elevation change — but the falls reward every step. The loop trail offers views of the Falls and the Middle Fork canyon from multiple vantage points. Spring and early summer bring the highest water volume; summer weekends see moderate crowds on this underrated classic.
Trail Highlights
- 410-foot freefall — sixth-highest waterfall in the United States
- Spectacular granite canyon viewpoint perched above the Middle Fork Feather River
- Loop trail option provides multiple viewing angles of the falls
- Spring and early summer offer peak water volume from Sierra snowmelt
- Plumas National Forest setting offers excellent wildflower displays in April-May
Trail Description
From the Feather Falls trailhead on Lumpkin Road, follow the Loop Trail (either direction — clockwise is recommended). The trail descends through mixed oak and conifer forest, crossing several small streams in the first few miles.
The main overlook arrives at 4.5 miles — a granite ledge perched high above the canyon with the 410-foot plunge directly in front. The view is vertiginous and magnificent. A second overlook allows a slightly different perspective. Return via the loop trail (or retrace steps). The climb back out to the trailhead earns the elevation gain.
Tips & What to Bring
- Carry 3 liters of water — the long trail has limited reliable water sources
- Start before 8am; the 9.7-mile loop is a long day and afternoon heat can be severe
- The main overlook has no railing — exercise extreme caution near the edge
- Spring (April-May) offers peak flow and wildflowers along the trail
- This is a genuine backcountry hike — download a map before you go
