Flat Lick Falls: A Family-Friendly Cascade in Laurel County
Flat Lick Falls Recreation Area, Laurel County
About Flat Lick Falls
Flat Lick Falls may not be the tallest waterfall in Kentucky, but the combination of easy access, beautiful gorge scenery, and a family-friendly trail make it one of the most satisfying waterfall hikes in Laurel County. The falls drop 15 feet across the full width of Flat Lick Creek into a clear pool framed by sandstone bluffs.
The trail follows the creek downstream through a narrow gorge cut from the Cumberland Plateau sandstone. The walls rise 40-60 feet on both sides, draped in fern and moss. Rhododendron and mountain laurel create a tunnel of blooms in late May. This is a perfect introduction to Kentucky waterfall hiking for families with young children.

- 15-foot wide curtain waterfall on clear Flat Lick Creek
- Easy, well-maintained trail suitable for families and beginners

Trail Description
From the Flat Lick Falls Recreation Area trailhead, follow the trail downstream along Flat Lick Creek. The gorge walls appear quickly, and the creek runs over flat sandstone slabs before deepening below the falls.
At 0.9 miles the trail delivers you to the base of the falls, where the full 15-foot curtain is visible. The pool below is shallow near the edges — perfect for young hikers to wade. Return the same way via the creek-level trail.
