About Foster Falls

Foster Falls is the kind of waterfall Tennessee hikers dream about. A 60-foot plunge into a deep, shaded swimming hole gorge, accessible via a short but moderately demanding trail in South Cumberland State Park in Grundy County. The gorge is lined with hemlocks and mountain laurel, and the pool below the falls stays cold even in August.

South Cumberland State Park encompasses multiple separate natural areas across the Cumberland Plateau, and Foster Falls is its most popular attraction. The gorge walls rise 80 feet on both sides, and the forest canopy creates a cool green tunnel above the plunge pool. This is one of the most satisfying short waterfall hikes on the entire plateau.

Trail Highlights

  • 60-foot plunge into a spectacular gorge swimming hole
  • Classic Cumberland Plateau sandstone canyon scenery
  • Stays shaded and cool even on the hottest summer days
  • Mountain laurel blooms line the gorge in late May
  • Short enough for families with older children but dramatic enough for serious hikers

Trail Description

From the Foster Falls trailhead off US-41, follow the trail into the Little Fiery Gizzard Creek gorge. The trail descends via switchbacks through hemlock forest before reaching the creek-level path.

The falls appear after a final bend in the gorge — the full 60-foot drop is immediately visible and impressive. The swimming hole pool is deep and clear, rimmed by flat sandstone ledges perfect for sunning. Return via the same switchback trail.

Tips & What to Bring

  • The pool is cold year-round — it is refreshing in July but bracing in spring
  • Wear water shoes for scrambling on the wet sandstone around the pool
  • The gorge can be hazardous in flash flood conditions — check weather before going
  • Combine with Fiery Gizzard Trail for a longer Cumberland Plateau adventure
  • South Cumberland SP has no entry fee — donations to the park are welcome
