The Franconia Ridge Loop is the crown jewel of New Hampshire's White Mountains and, many argue, the finest alpine hike east of the Rockies. The 8.9-mile loop climbs via the Falling Waters Trail to Little Haystack Mountain (4,760 ft), then traverses over a mile of fully exposed ridgeline above treeline — with 360-degree views at every step — across Mount Lincoln (5,089 ft) to Lafayette (5,260 ft), before descending via Greenleaf Trail to Franconia Notch. The 3,900 feet of total elevation gain earns every view.

The ridgeline traverse is the defining experience. The Presidential Range is bigger and higher, but nowhere else in the East does an exposed alpine ridge stretch so accessibly and so beautifully. On the ascent via Falling Waters, the trail passes Cloudland Falls (80 feet, one of the most photogenic in New England) and Shining Rock. The descent from Lafayette to Greenleaf Hut (an AMC facility offering bunks and meals) through the krummholz and then full forest makes the loop feel like three distinct hikes in one.

The trailhead is at Lafayette Place Campground in Franconia Notch State Park. A $5 parking fee applies. Dogs are permitted but the exposed alpine ridge is challenging for them in all but ideal conditions. No hiking permit required. The ridgeline is dangerous in storms and winter conditions (which can occur any month); check the Mount Washington Observatory weather forecast before hiking.
