DuPont State Recreational Forest contains more than 90 miles of trails and multiple major waterfalls, but High Falls earns its name. At 120 feet, it is the tallest waterfall in the forest and, seen from the cliff-edge overlook above, creates a perspective of vertigo-inducing scale. The approach via Buck Forest Road provides a longer, quieter alternative to the crowded Hooker Falls trailhead.

Trail Overview

Beginning at the Buck Forest trailhead on Buck Forest Road, this route follows the Little River downstream through an open hardwood forest, passing several small cascades before arriving at the top of High Falls. The overlook at the brink offers an elevated view of the falls and the gorge below. A steep spur descends to the base pool for those willing to scramble. The return follows the same path.

High Falls Up Close

The main drop launches off a broad basalt shelf and fans wide as it falls, creating a thunderous curtain of white water that fills the gorge with mist. The base pool is large, cold, and clear — perfect for swimming in summer. In fall, the gorge walls above the falls are brilliantly colored, making the overlook view especially memorable.
