About High Falls of Cheat

High Falls of Cheat is the kind of waterfall that rewards those willing to earn it. Located deep in the Monongahela National Forest near Parsons, Tucker County, it requires a 4-mile round-trip hike through dense hardwood forest to reach. The falls drop in two tiers into a remote canyon of the Cheat River watershed.

The trail follows an old railroad grade before descending steeply to the river. The remote setting means you may well have the falls to yourself. Spring snowmelt creates a thunderous torrent; even in summer the falls maintain respectable flow. This is a true backcountry waterfall experience in the heart of WV.

Trail Highlights

  • Remote multi-tier waterfall on the Cheat River drainage
  • Old railroad grade makes the approach hike historically interesting
  • Excellent solitude even on summer weekends
  • Spring snowmelt produces peak flow and maximum drama
  • Classic backcountry West Virginia forest environment

Trail Description

From the trailhead parking area near Parsons, follow the old railroad grade along the Cheat River tributary. The flat grade makes the first 1.5 miles easy walking through mature hardwood forest with river views.

At the 1.5-mile mark the trail descends steeply off the grade toward the river. Follow use trails to the base of the lower falls, then scramble upstream for views of the upper tier. The canyon walls rise steeply on both sides. Return via the same route — the climb back to the railroad grade is the most demanding section.

Tips & What to Bring

  • A map and GPS are essential — this trail is not well-marked in places
  • Bring plenty of water; the approach is longer than it feels on the flat grade
  • Afternoon thunderstorms are common in summer — start early and be off by noon
  • Wear long pants to protect against brush on the descent to the river
  • The falls shrink significantly in dry months — late spring is the ideal window
