About Horsetail Falls and Ponytail Falls

The Horsetail Falls loop in the Columbia River Gorge delivers two dramatically different waterfall experiences in under 3 miles. Horsetail Falls drops 176 feet directly from the gorge wall into a pool visible from the highway. Ponytail Falls (Upper Horsetail Falls) drops 100 feet over a basalt overhang large enough to walk behind — one of the most accessible behind-the-falls experiences in the Pacific Northwest.

The loop trail connects both falls via the upper gorge trail with views of the Columbia River and access to the historic Columbia River Highway State Trail. This is an excellent family hike — short enough for young children but dramatic enough to satisfy experienced hikers. The behind-Ponytail-Falls experience is genuinely memorable.

Trail Highlights

  • Walk directly behind Ponytail Falls through a basalt cave overhang
  • Horsetail Falls visible from the Historic Columbia River Highway
  • Short 2.7-mile loop suitable for families with children
  • Columbia River views from the upper trail section
  • Part of the larger Columbia River Gorge waterfall trail network

Trail Description

From the Horsetail Falls trailhead on the Historic Columbia River Highway, admire the 176-foot plunge and then follow the trail up the canyon wall on switchbacks. The trail levels off on the upper bench above the gorge.

After 1.3 miles the trail arrives at Ponytail Falls. The basalt overhang is large enough to walk completely behind the 100-foot cascade on a wide ledge — a dramatic and unique experience. Continue the loop back down to the highway trailhead.
