Wildlife: mule deer, black bears, mountain lions, wild turkeys, golden eagles.
Best seasons: April through November; a demanding wilderness day hike or overnight to one of the world's largest arches. Kolob Arch spans 287 feet — one of the longest natural arches on Earth — and sits deep in Zion's remote Kolob Canyons backcountry. The primitive trail follows La Verkin Creek through towering red sandstone canyon walls.
Pack plenty of water — desert and high-altitude trails demand more hydration than you expect. Layers are essential above 10,000 feet.
Leave No Trace: stay on designated trails, pack out all waste, and respect wildlife and other visitors.
