Laurel Falls: The Most Visited Waterfall in the National Park System
Great Smoky Mountains National Park, Sevier County
About Laurel Falls
Laurel Falls holds an unusual distinction: it is the most visited waterfall in the entire US national park system. The 80-foot two-tiered cascade sits just 1.3 miles from the trailhead on the Laurel Falls Trail, one of the few paved hiking trails in Great Smoky Mountains National Park. It is named for the mountain laurel that blooms in spectacular pink and white along the trail each May and June.
Despite the crowds, Laurel Falls is genuinely beautiful — the two tiers frame a footbridge perfectly, and the clear water runs year-round. The paved trail makes it accessible to nearly everyone, and the relatively short distance means families with young children can make the round trip comfortably. For the best experience, visit at sunrise or on a weekday in the shoulder season.

The Laurel Falls trailhead is on Little River Road west of Sugarlands Visitor Center. The paved trail climbs steadily through oak and pine forest before entering the mountain laurel zone. The pavement ends at the falls footbridge.
The lower tier drops below the footbridge while the upper tier is visible above. A short path leads to the base of the upper tier. Return via the same paved trail. Sunset light on the upper tier is particularly beautiful on clear evenings.
