About Laurel Gorge Falls

The Laurel Creek gorge in Carter County is one of northeastern Kentucky's most dramatic geological features — a deep sandstone canyon carved through the Cumberland Plateau by a tributary of Tygarts Creek. A series of cascades punctuate the gorge, culminating in the main Laurel Gorge falls where the creek plunges in a multi-tiered drop through layered sandstone.

The area is closely linked to Carter Caves State Resort Park, which manages a network of trails through the cave and gorge systems of northern Carter County. The forest here is particularly dense and beautiful, with old hemlocks draping the canyon walls and rhododendron creating year-round green tunnels along the creek.

Trail Highlights

  • Multiple cascades along the length of the gorge
  • Old hemlock and rhododendron forest creates a year-round green canopy
  • Close to Carter Caves State Resort Park cave tours
  • Remote enough for solitude on most weekdays
  • Excellent geological features including layered sandstone and rock shelters

Trail Description

From the trailhead near Carter Caves, follow the Laurel Creek trail into the gorge. The canyon walls rise quickly, and the creek runs over flat sandstone slabs before reaching the deeper gorge sections.

Progress through the gorge past several smaller cascades before reaching the main falls area at approximately 2.2 miles. The multi-tiered drop is best viewed from the creek-level trail. Several rocky viewpoints along the rim provide elevated perspectives. Return the same way.
