📈 Elevation Profile
Linville Falls is where the Linville River abandons the Blue Ridge Parkway and plunges off the edge of the world. The falls drop 45 feet into Linville Gorge — at 2,000 feet deep, the deepest river gorge in the eastern United States — and the views from the overlook trails above rank among the most dramatic in all of North Carolina.
Trail Overview
Multiple short trails branch from the visitor center at Milepost 316.4 of the Blue Ridge Parkway. The most popular route follows the Linville Falls Trail to the Erwin's View overlook, which provides the classic perspective on both the upper chute (where the river accelerates before the drop) and the main plunge into the gorge below. The trails are paved near the visitor center and transition to packed gravel on the approaches.
The Falls
The upper section of Linville Falls is a powerful chute through a narrow slot, accelerating the river before it launches off the main ledge. The lower falls drop 45 feet into a pool at the top of the gorge, then tumble further through cascades not visible from the overlooks. In spring, the volume is enormous; autumn visits combine peak foliage with the gorge's natural drama.
Tips for Your Visit
- Multiple overlooks: Allow time to visit at least two viewpoints (Chimney View and Erwin's View) for different perspectives
- Facilities: Visitor center with restrooms; free entry via National Park
- Fall foliage: One of the most photographed fall foliage spots in the southern Appalachians — peak usually mid to late October
- Gorge hiking: The Linville Gorge Wilderness below the falls is a serious backcountry destination — separate trip required
