About Lower Calf Creek Falls

Lower Calf Creek Falls is one of the most spectacular hikes in Utah — a 126-foot plunge into a stunning turquoise pool that seems impossibly lush in the heart of the red rock canyon country of Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument. The trail follows Calf Creek through a narrow sandstone canyon where Fremont culture pictographs decorate the canyon walls and hanging gardens of maidenhair fern drape shaded alcoves.

The 6-mile round trip crosses the creek several times and traverses sandy desert terrain that can be demanding in summer heat. But the payoff — a tall, thin falls dropping into a pool of cool, perfectly clear water surrounded by cottonwoods and desert willows — is worth every step. This is one of those places that makes you stop and stare in disbelief that such beauty exists.

Trail Highlights

  • 126-foot plunge into a stunning turquoise pool in red rock canyon country
  • Fremont culture pictographs visible on the canyon walls along the trail
  • Hanging gardens of maidenhair fern in shaded canyon alcoves
  • Cottonwood trees provide shade at the pool — a perfect desert oasis
  • One of the most beautiful waterfall destinations in the entire American Southwest

Trail Description

From the Calf Creek Recreation Area campground on UT-12, follow the trail upstream along the creek. The canyon walls rise quickly, and the trail passes several interpretive signs about Fremont culture rock art visible on the canyon walls.

After 3 miles the falls come into view — a thin 126-foot plunge dropping from the canyon rim into the turquoise pool below. The pool is cold, clear, and absolutely inviting. The cottonwood shade around the pool creates the ultimate desert oasis. Return via the same trail.

Tips & What to Bring

  • Carry extra water — the 6-mile sandy trail in desert heat demands 3+ liters
  • Wear sun protection (hat, long sleeves, sunscreen) — shade is minimal on the trail
  • The pool is swimmable and wonderful — bring a towel and water shoes
  • Visit before 9am or after 4pm in summer to avoid the most intense midday heat
  • UT-12 between Boulder and Escalante is one of America's most scenic highways — drive the whole thing
