Blood Mountain – Appalachian Trail
Blood Mountain is the highest peak along the Appalachian Trail in Georgia, rising to 4458 feet and offering commanding views of the surrounding Blue Ridge Mountains. The classic loop combines the Appalachian Trail and the Byron Reece Trail, departing from the Byron Reece Trailhead on US-19/129 near Vogel State Park.
The summit hosts the Blood Mountain Shelter, a two-room stone structure built by the Civilian Conservation Corps in 1934, one of the oldest shelters along the entire AT. The shelter provides emergency protection from the frequent afternoon thunderstorms that roll across the Georgia ridges in summer. The rock formations near the summit are quartzite, and the open granite outcrops deliver unobstructed panoramas in multiple directions.
The loop ascends via the AT through dense oak and hickory forest, then descends via the Byron Reece Trail through a drier, more open woodland. Wildflowers are prolific in April and May, including flame azalea and trillium. The Byron Reece Memorial at the trailhead honors the Georgia poet. Parking is large and free, with a privy available. Water sources exist along the route but should be treated. This is among the most popular day hikes in northern Georgia.
