Max Patch Summit

Max Patch is widely considered the most photogenic location on the entire Appalachian Trail, a sweeping 4629-foot grassy bald that delivers a full 360-degree panorama of the Southern Appalachians. The summit loop is short at 2.4 miles but packs extraordinary visual reward, with views stretching from the Great Smoky Mountains to the south, to Mount Mitchell to the east, and the Black Mountains beyond.

The open bald was maintained as a pasture and small airstrip before being acquired by the US Forest Service in the 1980s. Today the Pisgah National Forest manages it for both recreation and ecological preservation of its rare high-elevation grassland habitat. The AT crosses the summit via a mowed path through native grasses and wildflowers including goldenrod, wild bergamot, and various asters.

Sunrise and sunset visits are extremely popular, drawing photographers from across the region. The gravel access road off NC-1182 is narrow with limited parking, and overflow lots fill early on weekends. A small loop trail circles the summit perimeter before returning to the trailhead. No water is available at the summit. Snow and ice persist well into spring at this elevation, making traction devices advisable November through March. Leave No Trace is strongly enforced here.
