Springer Mountain

Springer Mountain marks the southern terminus of the Appalachian Trail at AT mile 0, a sacred starting point for thousands of thru-hikers each year. This 5.4-mile out-and-back follows the Approach Trail from Amicalola Falls State Park, ascending steeply through hardwood forest past the base of Amicalola Falls, one of the tallest cascading waterfalls east of the Mississippi at 729 feet total drop.

The final push to the 3782-foot summit passes through dense rhododendron and mountain laurel tunnels before breaking into the open clearing at the top. A bronze plaque embedded in a flat rock slab officially marks the trail terminus, along with a weathered register box where hikers log their names and intentions. Views from the summit extend southwest toward the Cohutta Wilderness.

The Approach Trail is blazed in blue, transitioning to the iconic white blazes of the AT itself near the summit. Spring brings wildflower blooms including trillium and bloodroot. Wildlife sightings include black bear, white-tailed deer, and eastern box turtles. Parking is available at the visitor center lot at Amicalola Falls State Park, where water and restrooms are accessible before departure.
