CO - San Juan Range Section

The San Juan Range Section of the Colorado Trail is widely considered the most spectacular segment of the entire 486-mile route, traversing the rugged terrain above Silverton through a landscape of jagged 13,000-foot peaks, wildflower-covered alpine meadows, and sweeping high-altitude basins. The CT here travels above treeline for extended stretches, providing sustained views that rival anything in the American mountain West.

The Weminuche Wilderness flanks this section, and the remoteness of the terrain intensifies the further hikers travel from the Silverton and Durango trailheads. The route crosses multiple passes above 13,000 feet and navigates through the heart of the San Juans, a range formed by some of the most intense volcanic activity in the Rocky Mountain region. The result is a landscape of unusual color and geological drama, with mineral-stained peaks and ridgelines in shades of rust, ochre, and purple. Afternoon thunderstorms are nearly daily occurrences in summer and prompt above-treeline descent before noon is essential. The wildflower displays in July and early August are extraordinary, with entire hillsides blanketed in columbine, Indian paintbrush, and alpine sunflowers.
