CO - Waterton Canyon – Colorado Trail
Waterton Canyon marks the official starting point of the Colorado Trail at mile zero, launching the 486-mile journey from the Denver foothills all the way to Durango in the San Juan Mountains. This opening section follows a wide gravel road along the South Platte River through a spectacular canyon that seems remarkably remote given its proximity to one of the nation largest metropolitan areas. The flat to gently rolling terrain makes it accessible to hikers of all fitness levels.
Bighorn sheep are almost guaranteed on this section, regularly descending to the canyon floor in relaxed groups visible from the trail. The canyon walls display colorful geological formations and the river supports healthy fishing. The paved and gravel surface reflects the former road use of this corridor before it was converted to recreational access. The easy grade and well-marked trailhead make Waterton Canyon the ideal introduction to the CT for beginners testing their legs before committing to the longer and more demanding segments ahead. A small day-use parking area at the trailhead fills quickly on summer weekends, so early arrival is recommended for stress-free access.
