The Wind River Range Section of the CDT is frequently cited as the most scenically spectacular segment of the entire trail, passing through a landscape of granite spires, turquoise glacial lakes, and vast snowfields that rival anything in the American West. The highlight of this section is the Cirque of the Towers, a horseshoe of granite peaks surrounding Lonesome Lake that ranks among the most photographed wilderness landscapes in Wyoming.

This multi-day route demands significant fitness and backcountry experience. The CDT here often follows unofficial routes across high passes and boulder fields where maintained trail gives way to cairned routes. Crossings of Big Sandy, Elkhart Park, and other trailheads allow for various itinerary configurations. The Winds host the largest glaciers in the Rocky Mountains south of Canada, and the sky-blue lakes beneath these ice masses are strikingly beautiful. Grizzly bears are occasionally reported in northern sections. Fishing for golden and brook trout in the countless alpine lakes is exceptional. Pack a filter and plan for changeable mountain weather throughout the summer.
