CA - Tuolumne Meadows to Cathedral Lakes

The Tuolumne Meadows to Cathedral Lakes hike departs from one of the most beautiful subalpine meadow systems in the Sierra Nevada at JMT mile 21, climbing through fragrant lodgepole pine forest to a pair of stunning high-altitude lakes framed by the soaring spires of Cathedral Peak. The lower lake at 9,288 feet sits in a glacial bowl with crystal-clear water reflecting the distinctive pointed granite summit above.

Cathedral Peak, at 10,911 feet, is one of the most famous technical climbing objectives in Yosemite and provides a dramatic focal point for the entire hike. The upper lake sits in an even more austere granite basin that feels genuinely remote despite the relatively short approach. This section of the JMT showcases the classic High Sierra aesthetic of polished granite domes, pristine lakes, and open subalpine terrain. Tuolumne Meadows sits along Tioga Road, providing easy vehicle access from both the Yosemite Valley side and the Eastern Sierra. The meadow itself is worth extended exploration before or after the hike, as it harbors rich wildflower displays and excellent wildlife viewing through late summer.
