TRT - Mount Rose Section

The Mount Rose Section of the Tahoe Rim Trail ascends to the highest point on the entire 165-mile TRT at 10,776 feet, offering summit views that extend south across the Lake Tahoe basin, east over the Great Basin desert toward Reno, and north into the Sierra backcountry. Mount Rose stands as the dominant peak on the northern rim of the Tahoe basin and its position between the lake environment and the arid Great Basin creates a remarkably diverse ecological setting.

The trail climbs through sagebrush meadows and stands of mountain hemlock and whitebark pine, passing spectacular Galena Falls midway along the route. The falls plunge dramatically into a narrow canyon and are particularly impressive in early summer when snowmelt is flowing strongly. The upper slopes of Mount Rose support a rich display of alpine wildflowers in July and August, including columbine, paintbrush, and sky pilot. The summit provides the clearest possible views of Lake Tahoe from above, revealing the full extent of the second-deepest lake in the United States. The city of Reno is visible to the northeast on clear days, providing a striking visual contrast between the mountain environment and the urban desert below.
