About Minnehaha Falls

Minnehaha Falls brings a touch of poetry to the Lake Rabun area of Rabun County. The name comes from Longfellow's Song of Hiawatha, and the falls live up to the romantic billing — a series of cascades tumbling nearly 100 feet through a lush gorge of rhododendron and hemlock, ending in a pool accessible via a short nature trail.

The Lake Rabun community surrounding the falls is one of the most charming mountain lake areas in Georgia, with beautiful historic cottages lining the lake shore. The falls are a short drive from Clayton, the Tallulah Gorge, and the outstanding restaurants and shops of the Rabun County mountain resort area.

Trail Highlights

  • 100-foot cascade series through a lush rhododendron and hemlock gorge
  • Located in the beautiful historic Lake Rabun cottage community
  • Short, easy trail suitable for families and casual hikers
  • Perfect base camp for a Rabun County outdoor weekend
  • Nearby Tallulah Gorge State Park adds dramatic canyon scenery

Trail Description

From the Minnehaha Falls parking area on Lake Rabun Road, follow the short nature trail into the gorge. The path descends gently through dense rhododendron to the base of the lowest cascade.

The full series of cascades is visible from the trail as it ascends alongside the falls. The upper cascade is the most dramatic — a clean 40-foot drop. Return via the same trail.

Tips & What to Bring

  • The Lake Rabun Road is narrow and winding — drive slowly and watch for pedestrians
  • Visit in May-June when rhododendron blooms create a spectacular tunnel on the approach
  • Combine with a swim in Lake Rabun for a complete Rabun County day
  • Nearby Clayton has excellent dining options for a post-hike meal
  • The falls are most impressive in spring and after rain — summer can see reduced flow
