About Mossbrae Falls

Mossbrae Falls is unlike any waterfall in California. Rather than a single plunge from a cliff, the falls emerge from an entire mossy hillside in dozens of separate springs and curtains, creating a wide green wall of water that flows into the Sacramento River below. The effect is of a hillside that has simply decided to become a waterfall — lush, magical, and completely unique.

Reaching Mossbrae Falls requires walking along a stretch of railroad tracks above the Sacramento River near Dunsmuir in Shasta County. The area is privately owned and actively used by trains — visit during authorized periods and stand well clear of tracks when trains pass. The Sacramento River below is one of California's finest trout streams, and the volcanic geology of the Mount Shasta foothills creates the spring-fed magic of the falls.
