🥾 Trail Info
🗺️ Trail Map
Mount Whitney via Main Trail is one of California's most rewarding hiking destinations, offering 22.0 miles of challenging terrain with 6100 feet of elevation gain through some of the region's most dramatic high-country scenery. The trailhead is located Lone Pine, CA, making it accessible from nearby towns and a popular choice for both locals and visitors seeking a genuine mountain adventure.
From the trailhead, the route climbs steadily through a mix of forest and open terrain. The lower section winds through stands of conifers, where the canopy filters morning light and the sound of distant water follows you up the switchbacks. As elevation increases, the trees give way to subalpine meadows and rocky ridgelines — the views expanding with every hundred feet of altitude gained. Wildlife sightings are common here: watch for marmots on boulder fields, hawks riding thermals above the ridge, and deer picking through the meadow margins at dawn and dusk.
The upper section of the trail demands your full attention. The path narrows as it crosses exposed terrain, and the footing becomes rocky and uneven. Poles are helpful on both the ascent and the descent. Near the top, you'll encounter the kind of expansive panorama that makes the effort worthwhile — mountains layered in every direction, valleys folded below, and on clear days, landmarks visible for fifty miles or more. Take your time at the summit or high point; you've earned it.
The trail is rated Expert and runs as a Out-and-back, covering 22.0 miles total. Plan for 12–16 hours on the trail and start early — afternoon thunderstorms are common in summer in many parts of the country, and high exposed terrain is no place to be caught in lightning. Bring at least two liters of water, a layer for the summit, and sun protection. The best conditions are typically July–September.
Fees and access: $15/car + permit. Dogs: Yes (leash, below treeline). Permits: Whitney Zone Permit. Surface: Rock, switchbacks.
Whether you're chasing a summit, a view, or simply the feeling of being genuinely far from the road, Mount Whitney via Main Trail delivers the kind of experience that keeps hikers coming back to California's backcountry year after year. Leave no trace, stay on the trail, and enjoy every step.
