Crater Rim Trail – Halema'uma'u

The Crater Rim Trail section near Halema'uma'u offers the most direct view into Kilauea's active summit caldera — a 280-acre lava lake that has erupted intermittently since 2008 and continuously since December 2020, making it one of the most persistently active volcanic features on Earth. At night, the molten lava glows a vivid orange-red that illuminates the steam plume rising hundreds of feet into the sky, creating a spectacle visible from Hilo 30 miles away. Steam vents and sulfur fumaroles line the caldera rim trail, their sulfur dioxide emissions occasionally forcing trail closures when trade winds shift; the NPS provides real-time air quality monitoring. The trail crosses hardened lava flows from multiple eruption cycles, with 2018 collapse features — enormous cracks and slump blocks from Kilauea's dramatic summit caldera collapse that year — still fresh and raw at the rim's edge. Sulfur crystals in shades of yellow and orange encrust the vent rims. The Halema'uma'u crater holds deep significance in Native Hawaiian tradition as the home of Pele; offerings of flowers and ti leaves are often placed at the overlook railing.
