Heron Rookery Trail

The Heron Rookery Trail winds through one of the finest old-growth forest remnants in the Indiana Dunes, following the Little Calumet River through a cathedral canopy of silver maple, cottonwood, and swamp white oak. The trail takes its name from the Great Blue Heron nesting colony that has occupied the tall cottonwood and maple snags here for generations. In spring, visitors can observe dozens of enormous stick nests high in the canopy, with adult herons returning to feed ungainly chicks. The forest floor floods seasonally, creating rich bottomland habitat supporting wild ginger, jack-in-the-pulpit, and trout lily. Unlike the park's famous dune trails, this route stays almost entirely flat, making it accessible to all ages and abilities. Interpretive signage explains the unique ecology of Lake Michigan's southern shoreline. Early morning visits in April and May offer the best heron activity and migrating warbler concentrations. The trail begins from the Heron Rookery trailhead off Mineral Springs Road.
