Tobin Harbor Trail

The Tobin Harbor Trail follows the northern shoreline of Tobin Harbor from Rock Harbor Lodge, one of Isle Royale's most scenic and accessible routes. Hikers travel through a boreal forest of white spruce, balsam fir, and paper birch on bedrock ridges above the crystal-clear harbor waters. Moose are frequently sighted along the trail, particularly in early morning when cows with calves wade into the shallows to feed on aquatic vegetation. Loons call from the harbor, and osprey hunt overhead. The trail passes the historic Edisen Fishery, a mid-20th century commercial fishing operation preserved by the park, offering interpretive exhibits on the island's fishing heritage. Near the trailhead, a kayak launch at Tobin Harbor allows paddlers to explore the protected cove. The harbor's exceptional clarity — fed by Lake Superior's cold, oligotrophic water — makes it possible to see bottom features several meters deep. The trail ends near the Rock Harbor Lighthouse, built in 1855 and among the oldest structures on the island.
