The Lower Brooks River Trail follows the south bank of the Brooks River from Brooks Camp to the world-famous Brooks Falls bear-viewing platform, the premier brown bear observation site on earth. Each July, dozens of brown bears congregate at Brooks Falls to intercept sockeye salmon leaping upstream on their spawning migration from Naknek Lake. The falls drop roughly four feet — just enough to create a natural barrier that salmon must repeatedly attempt, and bears have learned to position themselves precisely at the lip to catch fish mid-leap. The lower river platform offers views of bears fishing in the river below the falls, often with bears wading chest-deep or fully submerging to pin salmon on the gravel bottom. Bear density along Brooks River typically peaks in late July, with 60 or more individual bears documented using the corridor in a single day during peak salmon runs. All visitors must attend a mandatory bear orientation at Brooks Camp before hiking. The trail itself is flat gravel, but alert watching and quiet movement are essential. The associated Fat Bear Week competition in October, celebrating bears' pre-hibernation weight gain, has made several resident bears like Otis (Bear 480) internationally famous.
