Silver Salmon Creek Beach Walk – Lake Clark
Silver Salmon Creek is one of Alaska's premier brown bear viewing destinations, accessible only by floatplane from Homer or Kenai. The beach walk along this tidal flat estuary puts visitors within remarkable proximity to brown bears feeding on silver salmon from late July through September — one of the most extraordinary wildlife experiences in North America.
The bears are habituated to respectful human presence, allowing approaches that feel impossibly close. Sows with cubs, large boars establishing dominance, and adolescent bears honing their fishing techniques all share the creek simultaneously.
Day-trip floatplane charters from Homer (~45 min each way) make this accessible without an overnight. No established trails — the walk follows the beach and creek bank. Maintain 50-yard distance from bears and carry bear spray.
