Brokeoff Mountain is the highest peak accessible by trail in Lassen Volcanic National Park at 9,235 feet, offering what many consider the finest panoramic views in the park — Lassen Peak, Mount Shasta, and on clear days the Sacramento Valley spreading in every direction.

Brokeoff was once part of ancient Mount Tehama, a shield volcano that stood roughly 11,500 feet tall and collapsed approximately 400,000 years ago. The eroded remnant preserves evidence of that collapse in its fractured volcanic rock and hydrothermal alteration zones near the base, where acidic steam still vents from the ground.

The trailhead is at the southwest park entrance on Highway 89. The route begins steeply and maintains a sustained climb throughout with no flat recovery sections. Carry at least 2 liters of water. Snow persists near the summit into July. The summit register dates back decades and the views reward every step of the climb.
