Balcony House Tour

Balcony House is Mesa Verde's most physically demanding ranger-led tour, designed as a deliberately intimate encounter with Ancestral Puebloan architecture. The 40-room dwelling clings to a sheer canyon wall 600 feet above Soda Canyon, accessible only by climbing a near-vertical 32-foot wooden ladder, then crawling on hands and knees through a 12-inch-wide, 18-inch-tall tunnel that the original residents dug as a defensive passage. The balcony itself — a cantilevered wooden platform supported by original vigas — overlooks a 600-foot drop with no guardrail. Rangers highlight a spring that seeps through the cliff wall and would have supplied drinking water year-round, explaining why this otherwise precarious location was chosen over easier ground. The exit involves scaling two additional ladders and a 60-foot stone staircase before ascending back to the canyon rim. The route rewards those who complete it with unobstructed views of Soda Canyon's sheer sandstone walls, painted in the amber and rust tones of Cretaceous rock exposed over millions of years of erosion.
