Cliff Palace Ranger Tour

Cliff Palace is the largest cliff dwelling in North America, a staggering 150-room village tucked beneath a sandstone overhang that the Ancestral Puebloans constructed between roughly 1190 and 1280 CE. Rangers lead groups of up to 50 visitors down a paved trail and through four 10-foot wooden ladders that replicate the handholds used by the original inhabitants. Up close you can inspect intact plaster walls still bearing red and white geometric pigment, 23 circular kivas whose roofs once held communal fires, and a 26-foot round tower whose interior rooms align with the winter solstice sunrise. The dwelling sits 100 feet below the canyon rim, making the air noticeably cooler even on summer afternoons. Rangers explain the abrupt abandonment around 1285 CE, likely driven by prolonged drought and social upheaval, and point out corn-grinding bins, storage rooms sealed with original mud mortar, and fingerprints left in the clay by builders who lived here 700 years ago.
