Prater Ridge Trail

Prater Ridge is the highest point accessible by trail in Mesa Verde National Park, topping out at 8,572 feet on a narrow spine of pinyon pine and Utah juniper forest. The loop departs from Morefield Campground, climbing steadily through Gambel oak thickets and open meadows before reaching the ridge crest, where the Colorado Plateau unfurls in every direction — the La Plata Mountains rise to the northeast, Sleeping Ute Mountain dominates the western skyline, and on clear days the Shiprock volcanic plug is visible 60 miles into New Mexico. Mule deer and wild turkey are regularly spotted along the northern section of the loop, and the ridge's open character makes it one of the best places in the park for high-country birdwatching, including violet-green swallows and broad-tailed hummingbirds. The southern return leg descends through a dense juniper canopy that provides welcome shade. The trail sees far fewer visitors than the cliff dwelling tours, offering genuine solitude in a park that is otherwise crowded in peak summer months.
